The term media server is used in the networks of the Next Generation Networks( NGN), but also in home entertainment.

1. In next generation networks (NGN), media servers are network components that are controlled by a softswitch or application server and provide network capacity for media transmissionin time-triggered and packet-switched networks.
2. In consumer electronics, media servers are central components that process and store multimedia information and transmit the files to playback devices, media players, hi-fi systems and TV sets. Movies, photos, music and videos are stored in the media server. To reduce the amount of data for the media server, the audio and video files or the files for the game consoles are processed with appropriate compression algorithms. For example, music is stored in MP3 file format. The media server can be installed on a standard PC with a large hard disk, which may well have several terabytes ofstorage capacity. For larger concepts, the storage capacity can be further increased via network attached storage( NAS). Redundant RAID systems should also be considered.
