BlackBerry operating system

BlackBerryOS is a smartphone operating system that has been offered by "Research in Motion"( RIM) from Waterloo, Canada, since 1999. One of the most important features of the BlackBerry OS is receiving emails via a push service directly to the Blackberry end device. For this purpose, RIM's cell phones are constantly connected to a mail server.

With the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), a company's cell phones are administered like PC end devices without having to be physically present to the administrator. The BES server handles software distribution and synchronizes organizer data between a Blackberry cell phone, Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino or Novell Groupware. The BES server can also transfer corporate data from databases and, from Blackberry OS 5.0 (since the end of 2009), updates of the device software to the Blackberry end devices.

With a BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5, access to documents stored on a Windows file server in the company is possible. When sending, the BES compresses the transmitted data as well as documents from Microsoft Office that are sent as attachments to an e-mail so that only small data packets need to be transmitted over the mobile network. The data exchange between the cell phone and the server is secured with 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard( AES).

The BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS), which is provided by mobile network operators, was developed for private users. The BIS service brings together up to ten IMAP and POP3 mail accounts and transfers the e-mails to the user. A desktop manager for the personal computer or AppleMacintosh is available for synchronizing and backing up data and installing updates on the smartphone, which also imports music tracks and playlists from Apple iTunes or Windows Media Player to the smartphone.

Blackberry with multitasking

BlackBerry OS is multitasking capable and can run multiple applications simultaneously. The operating system also activates the media player and browser, the GPS system and map software, the camera with video recording, and games stored on the smartphone. Independent software developers can provide their own applications for the Blackberry App World via a programming interface. There, several thousand Java applications can be downloaded and moved from the "Download" folder on the cell phone to other directories.

As of Blackberry OS 5.0, SD cards in microformat from third-party manufacturers can also be used for authentication or to encrypt the device. The smartphone can thus be integrated into a security infrastructure( PKI) and then transmits encrypted emails via S/ MIME.

The further development of BlackBerry 5 is BlackBerry 6, which was followed by BlackBerry 7 in 2012 and Blackberry 10 as early as 2013.
