With a Fibre Channel bridge, part of the data traffic between the FC data source and the FC data sink can be transferred via another physical network.

For example, commands, status data and control information can be transmitted over the SCSI bus using an FC bridge. In some cases, the FC bridge can also act as a transport gateway or storage router.

In Fibre Channel, an FC bridge pair serves as an extension of a fabric between two E_Ports of an FC switch, which is realized by tunneling techniques using two B_Ports. The resulting inter-switch link( ISL) appears as a direct connection between the switches.
