video object (VOB)

The Video Object (VOB) file format is a multimedia container format for DVDs that combines various mutlimedial signals.

In VOB files, image and audio files, navigation files and subtitles are multiplexed into one data stream. The video signals are compressed with MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, the audio signals can be stored in one of several compression methods and also uncompressed. AudioCode Number 3( AC-3), Digital Theatre Sound( DTS), Dolby Digital, MPEG-1 Audio Layer-2 (MP2) and Linear Pulse Code Modulation ( LPCM) can be used as uncompressed formats.

The VOB container format has the extension *.vob. There is also an enhanced VOB format for HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. This Enhanced VOB has the extension *.evo.
