linear pulse code modulation (DVD) (LPCM)

Linear Pulse CodeModulation (LPCM) is a lossless audio codec for recording digitally encoded analog signals. It is the prescribed format for the audio tracks on DVD audio.

The LPCM audio track can include up to 8 (6/2) channels sampled at 12, 16, 20, or 24 bit sampling depths and sampling rates of 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz, as well as double (88.2 kHz and 96 kHz) and quadruple (176.4 kHz and 192 kHz) sampling rates. Since the maximum data transfer rate of the drives is limited, the limit data rate is reached with 8 channels sampled at 48 kHz and a sample depth of 16 bits, or four channels sampled at twice the sample rate or two at four times the sample rate. The resulting maximum data rate is 9.6 Mbit/s.

The maximum possible dynamic range at 24-bit quantization is 144.5 dB, with a frequency range of up to 96 kHz. At the lowest sampling rate of 44.1 kHz and a quantization of 16 bits, up to 14 hours of single- channel music can be stored on a DVD-Audio. The process is used in audio CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray discs, among others.

With LPCM technology, different sample rates and sample depths can be assigned to the individual channels.
