high definition audio-video network alliance (HANA)

High Definition Audio-Video Network Alliance (HANA) is an alliance founded by Samsung in 2005 to promote the networking of consumer electronics in the home. The basis of HANA networking is the IEEE 1394 bus system, which can be used to simultaneously transmit multiple audio and video signals, these even as HDTV.

Since HANA relies on proven standards, it was able to develop its own specifications relatively quickly. The decision in favor of 1394 is also related to quality of service( QoS) for isochronous data and copy protection for copyrighted data. By HANA's definition, the audio-video network is considered a trusted network for the purposes of copyright protection. In addition, a 1394 network can be implemented over a wide variety of physical transmission media; TP cable, plastic fiber, optical fiber, and coaxial cable.

Other HANA members from the consumer electronics sector include JVC and Mitsubishi, and semiconductor manufacturers include AMD, ARM, Sun Microsystems, Texas Instruments and Freescale. In a way, HANA counterbalances Intel's Viiv and the Ethernet networking of the Digital Living Network Alliance( DLNA).
