low rate wireless personal area network (WLAN) (LR-WPAN)

Low Rate Wireless PersonalArea Network (LR-WPAN) is a special wireless technology developed for sensors and actuators used in industrial production, automotive industry and commercial engineering. Thanks to this wireless technology, advanced solutions can be realized in the mentioned applications.

The main advantages of the "Low Rate Wireless Personal Area Network" technology include the self-configuration of sensor and actuator networks, the redundancy in the transmission link, through which higher reliability is achieved, and the extension of the transmission range through the multi- hop capability. In addition, LR-WPAN technology is based on standards, elaborated by the IEEE 802.15.4k working group. An example of a technology that has already been implemented is ZigBee.

The data rates of LR-WPAN technology are 20 kbit/s, 40 kbit/s, and 250 kbit/s. The different data rates are related to the ISM bands used in Europe and the USA. In Europe, the lower ISM band is at 868 MHz and can only be used for one channel with a data rate of 20 kbit/s. In the USA, it is at 915 MHz. In the USA, it is at 915 MHz and can transmit 10 channels at 40 kbit/s each. In the ISM band at 2.4 GHz, 16 channels with 250 kbit/s can be transmitted.

In terms of topology, it is a star topology or peer-to-peer network, which can be used specifically to control stations with low latency. Access method for the channels is CSMA/ CA, the transmission protocol works in handshake mode to increase reliability.
