DVB powerline (DVB-P)

DVBPowerline (DVB-P) is digital television transmitted over the power grid. The Open PLC European Research Alliance( OPERA) and the Consumer Electronic Powerline Communication Alliance( CEPCA) have developed Broadband Powerline( BPL), a technology that supports data rates of 200 Mbit/s and can therefore also be used for transmitting digital TV.

BPL technology is better suited for unidirectional broadcasting, i.e., for transmitting digital TV, than for bidirectional Internet surfing. Although the Federal Network Agency has severely restricted the field strengths for interference radiation on the network voltage, the topic of DVB-P could also be taken up in Germany via the EU bodies.

Conceptually, DVB-P feeds into a local power distribution node and can serve multiple television channels simultaneously at data rates of up to 200 Mbps. The approach to TV transmission could include real-time digital TV or video-on-demand( VoD), as the return channel only has to handle a few control commands.
