ColorSync
ColorSync is a color management system from Apple. Introduced as part of the Mac operating system for color-consistent workflows in the graphic arts industry, ColorSync evolved from a proprietary solution to an authoritative method for managing color information, ensuring color fidelity and a consistent color workflow from input device to press.
Color accurate input, editing and output with ColorSync is based on the International Color Consortium ( ICC) color profile for color management. To maintain color accuracy at the operating system level, Mac OS X now fully supports the ICC Version 4 standard.
Graphic mediator
In the graphic workflow, programs and professional tools use the color profiles of different manufacturers. Therefore, individual calibration is required for color conversion that meets professional standards. ColorSync is activated on the Macintosh using the utility of the same name. The software compares the color space of several devices, e.g. a color printer with that of a scanner. To ensure that colors are reproduced identically throughout the workflow, users can apply their own color profiles.
When a scanner, printer or digital camera is connected to a Macintosh, ColorSync registers the color profiles used and automatically adjusts the color representation across different media and operating systems. Because ColorSync is embedded in the Macintosh operating system, software developers can incorporate individual color management functions into their programs.
