CAN profile

In the case of fieldbuses, the lower protocol layers are clearly defined, but the designs of the applications are largely manufacturer-dependent. Since this leads to interoperability between applications, only standardization can provide a remedy; this is done with profiles, in the case of CANopen with CAN profiles.

The profiles define the agreements on the standardized communication techniques.

CAN in Automation (CiA), the organization of CAN bus users, has drafted CAN profiles for laboratory automation, air conditioning systems and construction machinery in several working groups. The CAN profiles specify the process data and configuration parameters to be transmitted, together with the associated formats. In addition to the applications mentioned, there are already profiles for input/output modules, measuring devices and programmable controllers.
