campus area network (CAN)

Campus networks (CAN) refers to networks that cover a specific geographic area such as a building, corporate campus, university campus, or industrial park.

Redundant area cabling in ring and star topology.

Redundant area cabling in ring and star topology.

Such networks do not use the PSTN and are limited in extent to shorter distances. Campus networks can interconnect the local networks in buildings or floors, of research and production facilities. A campus network is specified in the relevant standards with a maximum distance of 2 km. Thus, it has a larger extent than a local area network( LAN), but is smaller than a metropolitan area network( MAN). The EIA/TIA568 and ISO/ IEC 11801 cabling standards prescribe off-premises cabling for campus networks.
