Voice over Data are all procedures in which voice communication takes place via network protocols that are normally used for data communication.

The aim of these techniques is, on the one hand, to reduce call charges by utilizing existing network structures and, on the other hand, to migrate to an end-to-end IP network in which voice and data networks, services and real-time applications are brought together by means of IP convergence. Important criteria for voice data transmission are the achievable voice quality, the requirements for voice signaling and voice processing, as well as the handling of data communication protocols and the performance characteristics of the networks used.

Voice over Data is realized in ATM as VoATM and VToA, in Frame Relay as VoFR and via IP protocol as VoIP.
