voice over frame relay (VoFR)

Voice over Frame Relay (VoFR) is a technique for transmitting voice traffic over the routers of a frame relay network. In this method, the voice information is segmented and encapsulated for transmission. Encapsulation and segmentation are performed according to the procedure described by the Frame Relay Forum( FRF) in FRF.12.

To minimize delays, the standardized procedure regulates the allocation of large data frames that may cause delays when queuing smaller VoFR frames. The network architecture for VoFR is hierarchical with one or more permanent virtual circuits, PVCs, coupling branch offices to regional sites or headquarters. Since the frame relay service is based on ISDN, the transport protocol used is usually TCP/ IP. Existing direct data links(DDV) and standard fixed links(SFV) can also be included in this scenario to reduce voice communication costs. The existing data and leased lines, as well as the terminal equipment, the customer premises equipment( CPE), help to ensure that VoFR can be implemented cost-effectively with predictable quality of service( QoS).
