With feeds, news portals offer a service with which current articles and news can be subscribed to and read directly by interested parties, comparable to a news ticker. The user does not need to call up the corresponding portals for this purpose.
All that is required to subscribe, display and read the feeds is special software: a feed reader or news reader. Since there are different feed formats such as Atom feeds or Really Simple Syndication( RSS), the feed reader must support these formats. Such feed readers can be downloaded as free downloads from the Internet.
In terms of function, feed readers are comparable to an e-mail program. They call up the subscribed feeds, collect the information and display it in order of topicality. The interested party can then decide whether he or she finds a contribution interesting and calls it up. When subscribing to a feed, the feed icon is simply clicked and a link is created in the context menu. The new link is then added in the feed reader.
