Computers without hard disks are often used in applications where a consistent data stock with constant data actuality is processed. These computers function as diskless workstations.

The necessary data is provided to the diskless workstations by a server. Diskless workstations can retrieve the data to be processed from the server and store their work results on the server 's hard disk. For the communication of the workstation computer with the server, Diskless Station use the bootstrap protocol or the DHCP protocol.

Diskless Workstation are functionally comparable to thin clients. The operating system and application software is provided by the central server. This reduces the administration effort, because all updates have to be performed only on the server.
