audio cable

Audio cables serve as connecting cables between audio components: Between tuner, CD or DVD player and amplifier. Since audio cables are usually equipped with RCA plugs, they are also called RCA cables.

An audio cable is a single-core cable with shielding, where the shielding is at ground potential. Just as around the plugs and the speaker cables, the characteristic values of the audio cable have a direct influence on the sound quality. There is on the one hand the contact resistance of the RCA plugs, but also the ohmic conductor resistance of the cable, although the current flow is negligible. Therefore, RCA cables are available in copper, silver-plated or with silver stranding. In addition, for all cables, their capacitance and inductance determine the transmittable frequency range. If such an audio cable has a high capacitance, then this together with the input resistance forms a low-pass filter, which attenuates high frequencies more than lower frequencies.

The quality of the shielding is also essential for the sound quality, since a shielding with a coarse-meshed braiding does not protect as strongly against interference as one with a close-meshed braiding shielding.

The RG-59 cable with an impedance of75 ohms is often used as the cable, or the higher quality RG-179 cable.
