CarPlay

"iOS in the Car" is a program developed by Apple to access devices running the iPhone OSoperating system. With this program, renamed CarPlay, users can access selected functions of the iPhone via the board system of the motor vehicle. Carplay is a feature of Apple's iOS mobile operating system and allows iOS-enabled devices such as the iPhone and iPad to be used securely through a vehicle's standard onboard system.

CarPlay shows the functions and apps of the iPhone on the display of the infotainment system, which can then be called up via the display or via corresponding control functions. Communication between the infotainment system and the iPhone is wireless.

The driver can access numerous iOS functions via the on-board computer, including Siri voice technology, navigation, telephony, music control, iMessage and Apple's map material. Furthermore, Carplay also enables the control of vehicle functions such as air conditioning and heating.

CarPlay can be started via the steering wheel and controlled with Apple's Siri voice technology. The software is suitable for iOS-enabled devices with a Lightning interface and an operating system from iOS 7.1.

The official presentation of iOS 7.1 with Carplay took place in March 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show. As "iOS in the Car", a precursor had been shown to a specialist audience during the WWDC (Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference) in June 2013.

At the beginning of 2014, the car manufacturers Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo announced the adoption of Carplay in their on-board computers, with other manufacturers following suit. In April 2014, authoritative manufacturers of car audio systems, including Pioneer and Alpine, also announced support for Carplay.
