video transcoding

Video transcoding is the conversion of one video format to another. Transcoding is about establishing compatibility between different video formats. Over the years, a wide variety of video compressionalgorithms have been developed for use in video telephony, video conferencing, or digital video.

The compression algorithms for video transcoding must be compatible with more modern algorithms. For this purpose, powerful transaction methods are being developed that handle the conversion of one algorithm` to another.

For example, older video conferencing systems work with H.263, while newer ones use H.264/ AVC. Corresponding transcoding ensures real-time conversion of one process into the other. In addition to this function, video transcoding also provides bandwidth adjustment. Video data is often stored with greatly reduced bandwidth; DVDs, for example, are compressed with MPEG-2. When playing video-on-demand or streaming video over IP networks, this format must be transcoded into a more bandwidth-efficient format for transmission.
