Like streaming audio or streaming music, streaming video belongs to streaming media. With streaming video, the video data is compressed, packetized and transmitted as a video stream over IP networks. On the receiving end, the individual data packets are assembled and displayed on a video player.
In streaming video, the video compression and the compression format determine the transmitted image quality. The streaming protocol takes care of the transmission of the video stream. There are several well-known video compressions for streaming video, such as Windows Media Video(WMV) from Microsoft, RealVideo from Real Networks, Quicktime from Apple, MPEG-4 and Flash from Adobe. For the mentioned file formats there are the corresponding players.
Streaming video can be used for web TV, Internet TV and web conferencing, both on personalcomputers, smartphones and also on TVs with Internet connection.
