video encoding invisible light (copy protection) (VEIL)

Video Encoding Invisible Light (VEIL) is a process developed by the US company of the same name that can be used to hide digital information in the luminance signal for copy protection.

This method works with steganographic watermarks and changes the luminance so insignificantly that the changes in brightness cannot be perceived by the normal viewer. Veil is used in the recording area in camcorders or digitalvideo recorders, checks the video signal with a video RAM( VRAM), and is designed to cause video equipment to stop recording as soon as a copy protection violation is detected.

Veil is to be implemented on a protection chip that is permanently installed in all HD-capable camcorders, VCRs, DVD drives and graphics cards. As soon as the protection chip detects the Veil mark, it interrupts the recording or transmission. This goes so far as to prevent even Veil-protected recordings from a screen. The watermark that protects the content cannot be eliminated either by filming or by recoding it into another file format. Even tampered hardware is detected and blocked for.
