openSUSE

openSUSE is a Linux distribution from the former SUSE Linux GmbH from Nuremberg, later Novell, and successor to SUSE Linux and SuSE Linux Professional.

In 1992, the former SuSE GmbH (Gesellschaft für Software- und Systementwicklung) bundled Linux disks into the commercial product S.u.S.E. Linux, since 1994 the package was delivered on CD-ROM, since June 2004 an installation via FTP server was possible.

In 2003, SUSE Linux was acquired by Novell and continued under that name until it was acquired by Attachmate in 2011. In December 2006, SUSE Linux was renamed openSUSE. To distinguish it from proprietary software, there were pure open-source packages or packages that also included proprietary software such as Adobe Reader, MP3 player and Flash Player.

openSUSE includes a desktop operating system with an e-mail client, the Firefoxweb browser and applications for the office, multimedia, graphics, image editing and games. With free software updates, a version of openSUSE is stabilized for at least 18 months after its release.

Since the renaming in openSUSE only versions are published, which consist completely of free software. At the same time, further development of SUSE Linux, which is based on openSUSE, takes place publicly, so that developers can test the alpha and beta versions and comment publicly in a bug tracker. SUSE Linux is offered as Enterprise Desktop (SLED) and Enterprise Server (SLES) at different conditions.
