network transistion
In data communication networks, a network transition forms the interface between two different networks.
The network gateway is responsible for adapting the physical transmission media as well as the network protocols, the transport protocols and the application protocols. As a rule, such a network transition is formed by a gateway. The adaptation concerns the data switching technology realized in the network layer with the network protocols, the transport layer with the adaptation of the transport protocols and last but not least the application layer with the transcoding of the application data.
The term network transition has no restrictions whatsoever with regard to the switching technology, the backup procedures or the way in which the data is transported.
