loopback
- Loopback is a communication channel with an end point. Any message transmitted over such a channel is received by the transmitting station. Loopback is used as an echo technique for fault location in transmission equipment. Some devices have built-in loopback tests. A loopback network is also specified in TCP/ IP, with most IP implementations supporting loopback interfaces. In a loopback network, traffic is addressed to the same computer.
- In Fibre Channel( FC), loopback is a mode of operation on FC-1 where information transmitted to the FC-1 transmitter goes directly to the FC-1 receiver in a bypass function. When an FC interface is in loopback mode, the loopback signal overrides any other external signal received by the FC receiver.
