Indata transmission, a bypass is a redundant parallel path for information transmission. If an error occurs in the main connection, then this parallel path is switched on to bypass the faulty unit without affecting the data flow.
This method is used for Token Ring, FDDI and Fibre Channel, among others. Optical bypasses can be used to connect FDDI nodes, providing redundancy and increasing the operational reliability of the data network by bypassing the node in the event of a fault.
Bypassing also means forwarding results in processors with pipelines. For this purpose, results are forwarded or returned via a processing stage. This technique is used when the instructions cannot yet be executed or their execution causes delays.
In photovoltaic systems, bypass diodes are used to protect the solar modules and to avoid negative influences from individual solar cells.
