home gateway initiative (HGI)

The Home Gateway Initiative (HGI) is an open forum of telcos founded in 2004 with the aim of publishing specifications for residential gateways(RGW).

The HGI focuses on the home network market and develops the specifications for home gateways and their services, which have changed over the years from long-distance voice to VoIP and digital TV. For its work, the HGI initiative relies on existing standards from the International Telecommunication Union( ITU), Digital Living Network Alliance( DLNA), the DSL Forum or the OSGi Alliance. The goal is to specify a low-cost solution for a multi- service home network connected to access networks with home gateways.

The HGI initiative consists of various groups for the business, the end-to-end architecture and its quality of service, and the architecture task force.
