When keywords are entered into a search engine, it creates result pages( SERP) on which the many web pages with the keywords are listed sorted according to certain parameters. This listing takes into account the relevance of the web pages to the search query.

Since the search algorithms are not able to recognize semantic connections, such web pages may appear in the result lists that represent a string of frequently mentioned terms. However, they do not contain any direct information in terms of content, but are merely used to manipulate traffic: Spam web pages. Moreover, search engines cannot distinguish good quality or up-to-date information from simple, amateurish information. This is the approach of the Hilltop algorithm, namely to distinguish informative web page content from manipulated texts or simple information.

The Hilltop algorithm evaluates the quality of information and therefore works on expert pages. As a relevance that it is a high quality information, the Hilltop algorithm works with a list of experts andchecks references of the experts to the web page being evaluated.
