advanced microcumputer system (AMS)

Advanced Microcumputer System(AMS) is an open, multiprocessor 16-bit bus system standardized by the International Electrotechnical Commission( IEC) under the designation IEC 796.

The AMS bus consists of a system bus, the local extension bus formed by an SMP bus or by an AT96 bus, and a PCI bus. It supports the dual-Europe card format from a mechanical point of view.

The multimaster structure of the AMS bus allows the construction of logically structurable, process-oriented subsystems, with the SMP bus acting as the input/output bus. Up to 16 central modules can be operated via the AMS bus, with access authorization to the AMS bus controlled via priorities by a so-called bus arbiter.

The AMS bus consists of separate, asynchronously operating data and address buses. The data bus has a bus width of 16 bits. The addressing range at memory addresses is 16 MB, at I/O addresses 64 KB.
