Profibus for decentralized peripherals (Profibus-DP)

The Profbus-DP (Profibus for Decentralized Peripherals) is used for the communication of decentralized peripherals with the control systems and the automation systems.

The Profbus-DP specifications for this open fieldbus include master- slave operation with cyclic transmission, the round-robin procedure for changing master stations, and connectionless and connection-oriented communication between the master and slave stations. In addition, the specifications optionally provide, among other things, data exchange with broadcast signals for slave-to-slave communication, isochronous transmission of the slaves, synchronization of the clock signal and redundancies.

The Profibus stands in the DP version for the RS-485 interface and is standardized under IEC 61158 and 61784.
