EN 50174

The European standardDINEN 50174 is a supplement to the cabling standardEN 50173. EN 50174 covers the installation, execution and operation of application-neutral communication cabling using symmetrical copper cables and optical fibers.

The standards DIN EN 50173 and DIN EN 50174 were later extended by the standards DNIEN 50310 and DIN EN50346. The 50174 standard consists of three parts:

• DIN EN 50174-1: Information technology - Installation of communication cabling, installation specification and quality assurance. Quality assurance is to ensure that the installed cabling complies with the specified requirements.
• DIN EN 50174-2: Information technology - Installation of communication cabling, installation planning and installation practices in buildings, data centers, industrial premises and homes. It deals with the separation of low- voltage cables from data cables, cable routing and installation distances.
• DIN EN 50174-3: Information technology - Installation of communication cabling, installation planning and outdoor installation practices.

In the standard DIN EN 50174-1 serves the preparation and agreement of the installation specifications for information technology cabling structures. It covers the routing and accommodation of cables and optical fibers, as well as installation and acceptance practices. In addition, EN 50174-1 includes a quality plan to demonstrate the installation specifications.

DIN EN 50174-2 deals with the requirements for installations and operation of information technology cabling in terms of safety, documentation, cable routing and testing. The standard takes into account the separation of information technology cabling and power supply lines as well as power distribution systems for low voltage in office buildings, industrial buildings and homes. It addresses lightning protection and EMC.
