Transmission technology or transmission technology refers to all techniques that support analog and digital communication between people, people and computers, and between computers. These are techniques with which speech, audio, images or videos are transmitted in a transmission system between communication devices and end systems.

Transmission techniques can be distinguished according to the type of transmission and the transmission medium according to the type of modulation, coding and compression, according to the transmission direction and transmission methods, according to the simultaneous use of the transmission medium by several subscribers, according to the available bandwidth and many more. All aspects of transmission technology relate to the physical layer.

Radio technology as well as wireline transmission, broadband as well as narrowband or baseband, simplex, half- duplex or duplex and the various multiplex methods. All these techniques shape transmission technology and, not least, the transmission speed in local networks as well as in mobile networks, city networks or wide- area networks. They enable many hundreds or thousands of subscribers to communicate with each other simultaneously without mutual interference.
