Language technology is a multi-faceted computational technology of linguistics. Speech technology is about natural language interaction between humans and machines. It is about speech recognition, speech analysis, understanding the spoken word, speech synthesis, and speech output.
The various facets of speech technology such as Natural Language Understanding( NLU) and Natural Language Processing( NLP) are already being used in speech recognition and speech processing dialog systems, Interactive Voice Response( IVR). The activities of speech technology are directed towards speech-driven interaction between humans and machines, as already realized in digital voice assistants. Other application areas of speech technology include speech-to- text and text-to-speech.
Speech technology is finding its way into many areas. For example, in voice-operated user interfaces(VUI), in which the user controls the computer by means of speech, enabling even the visually impaired to work with computers. Or in call centers equipped with speech dialog systems that analyze and evaluate natural language requests and respond with voice output. Another application area is voice recognition the verification of the speaker.
Through artificial intelligence, speech technology is expanding its vocabulary and word meaning and can therefore also be used in technical and health-specific specialties.
