server gated cryptography (SSL) (SGC)

Server Gated Cryptography (SGC) is an encryption protocol that was developed for the American financial service providers from the SSL protocol.

The background of the development were earlier export restrictions for encryption systems with high security. The SGC protocol uses 128-bit SSL encryption. Authentication is performed using special SGC certificates.

The SGC protocol has the same connection setup as the SSL protocol, Secure Socket Layer (SSL). It is a handshake procedure in which the server transmits an SGC certificate to the client during authentication. The client recognizes the certificate and sends a reset to the server. It then starts a new handshake.
