reset (RST)

Reset (RST) is the resetting of a program, computer, transaction, or connection to a previous functional state.

In the case of personal computers, it means resetting without restarting. Such a reset is executed, for example, when a computer or a program crashes. A distinction is made between a reset via the reset button on the computer or via a software reset supported by the operating system.

Indata transmission a reset may be necessary in case of a partial blocking of the network nodes or in case of a command refusal. In the TCP protocol there is the reset flag with which the sender indicates that it wants to terminate the connection.

In smartcard communication, the reset signal transmitted from the smartcard terminal to the smartcard when the smartcard is inserted initializes the smartcard. When a reset is triggered, the address counter is reset and the memory is cleared.
