Photo scanners form a separate group of devices that differ from flatbed scanners in that most do not use a scan line of photodiodes, but instead use image sensors like digital cameras. Instead of scanning line by line, the photo scanner takes a digital photo of the photo original. This has the advantages that it is very fast and that there are no moving mechanical parts.
Photo scanners are designed to process both reflective originals, i.e. paper photos, and transparency originals, i.e. slides, film strips and 35 mm films. In terms of design, photo scanners differ as stand-alone scanners with their own memory and memory card and scanners for PC connection. With these photo scanners, the scanned photo is compressed and saved as JPEG on the personal computer. In addition, the devices have certain differences in the image feeder, resolution, photo, original and slide size.
In most photo scanners working with CMOS sensor, the photos are placed in a holder and inserted into a slot in the device. The original is illuminated by a built-in light source and photographed. The resolution of photo scanners working with image sensors is about 5 megapixels( MP) and 400 dpi.
