personal communication service (mobile communications) (PCS)

In general, Personal Communication Services( PCS) refers to all mobile communications services of the various digital mobile communications networks that are licensed by service providers. The claim of Personal Communication Service is to offer next-generation services and also to act as a competitor in the access area. In addition to this claim, it should be noted that it is a cellular mobile communications network that operates at higher frequencies.

Personal Communication Service distinguishes between narrowband and broadband PCS services. The narrowband services, which operate at bandwidths of 12.5 kHz and 50 kHz, are suitable for use in telemetry or credit card confirmations, among other applications. The wideband services support existing and new cellular services. These include paging and short message service, telephony and long-distance copying, data communications, transmission of images and video, and wireless communications with portable computers.

In Europe, the European Radiocommunication Committee( ERC) designated the frequency range between 1,710 MHz and 1,785 MHz, and between 1,805 MHz and 1,880 MHz for personal communication services in 1998.

In addition to the existing services, the further development of PCS services is moving toward the Personal Communications Network( PCN), global networks, GMPCS, Enhanced Private Communication( EPC), Telepoint and other radio technologies such as the wireless private branch exchange (WPBX).
