organic transistor

Organic transistors or organic field-effect transistors are products of polymer electronics. Certain plastics can take on the properties of conductors, semiconductors and non-conductors through doping. This is exploited in organic semiconductors, but also in OLEDs and organic photovoltaics.

Like conventional transistors made of semiconductor materials, organic transistors consist of the source, the drain and the gate. Depending on the state of the art, the three electrodes are made of metallic material and the source and drain are connected via an organic semiconductor, or, in the case of all-organic FETs, all electrodes are also made of organic material.

Organic transistors, unlike organic light emitting diodes(OLEDs), require high carrier mobility. Single crystals have the highest charge carrier mobility of organic and inorganic materials, which also have the perfect structural order. However, in the fabrication of organic semiconductors, single crystals are subject to certain limitations in terms of their robustness and flexibility. Therefore, research continues to find alternative compromises.
