optical burst router (OBR)

An optical burstrouter (OBR) is a purely optical component for optical data packet switching that is used in the optical core network and in the network edge area. OBRs switch data packets or bursts on a purely optical basis.

In terms of layer structure, OBRs support DWDM connections on the physical layer, employ label switching on the second layer with direct implementation of optical burst switching. The third layer has IP functionality, as with Optical Crossconnect( OXC) and Terabit routers.
