In interactive television( ITV), Open TV forms the uniform platform for set-top boxes(STBs) so that they can access various other services in addition to television. Open TV is the operating system for the set-top boxes and is supported by public and private broadcasters.

With Open TV, the user can choose among different program providers and services. The Open TV operating system is also designed for current and future online services such as teleshopping or hybrid TV.

The Open TV core consists of a hardware abstraction layer( HAL) that provides hardware independence, TV libraries for different resolution formats, a choice of executing environments, and support for personalvideorecorders( PVR) that generate the environment for digital terrestrial television (DTT). Communication can be via telephone cable, DSL techniques or other network technologies.
