multimedia and hypermedia expert group (MHEG)

Multimedia and Hypermedia Expert Group (MHEG) is used to put multimedia documents into a logical structure. The MHEG group is an ISO expert group that develops standards for encoding multimedia objects, allowing objects from different media types to be assembled and presented across platforms. The MHEG developments are used in interactive multimedia presentations, where MHEG determines the relationships between individual contents. The script description for the structural information can be done in different languages.

The MHEG approach is similar to that of HypertextMarkup Language( HTML) for HTML documents. MHEG uses this approach for multimedia applications with a common exchange format that all receivers support.

There are several versions of MHEG: MHEG-1 supports objects that support procedural codes and decision processes. MHEG-3 defines a standard for virtual machines and bytecode representation, supporting portability across different hardware platforms.
