high efficiency video coding (HEVC)

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is a general term for high efficiency video compression, such as for the various MPEG versions, DivX, XviD, H.264/ AVC and especially H.265. The term HEVC is also used for the ITU standard H.265.

H.265/HEVC is the successor standard to H.264, which like it was significantly designed by the Fraunhofer Institute. H.265 differs from H.264/AVC by a factor of 2 higher data reduction with the same picture quality.

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) knows three HEVC profiles: Main Profile( MP), Main 10 Profile, and Main Still Picture Profile for adaptation to different transmission methods. In addition, the display formats are scalable between the smallest format of Quarter- VGA with 320 x 240 pixels to high-definition television( HDTV) up to UHDTV with 7,680 x 4,320 pixels, or in display formats for other video applications. The compression method is characterized by a low noise level, an extensive color space and a high dynamic range.
