generalized markup language (GML)

Generalized Markup Language(GML) is a markup language developed by IBM for formatting documents. It is used to describe documents according to their organizational structure, content and relationship.

The markups or tags from the Generalized Markup Language describe the table of contents, chapters, important and less important parts of the text, sections, tables, index, and so on. The authors of the documents do not need to worry about the typographical characteristics such as formatting, fonts, line spacing, font size or other typographical features.

Generalized Markup Language (GML) was the predecessor of Standardized Generalized Markup Language( SGML), standardized by the International Standards Organization ( ISO) and used as a markup language for unstructured documents.
