- In general, an index is a directory, table or indicator that can be searched from a dataset according to certain search criteria.
- In the storage technology it is the storage table which the program queries for the index sequential access to files or command addresses.
- In CD and DVD technology, it is markings on the data track that are used for the search.
- In printed works, books or magazines, the index is the keyword index. Authors and typesetters are supported by DTP programs in the creation of such an index. By marking the appropriate index terms, the programs create the index with the page numbers.
- Databases use indexes to sort records according to certain criteria. The generated index thereby marks the position of the entries.
- In search engines, the index is the inclusion of a web page in the search engine database. The process is called indexing.
