general exchange format (video, Grass Valley) (GXF)

The General Exchange Format (GXF) is an exchange format developed by the Grass Valley company for television studios to exchange finished audio and video between different video servers.

The GXF file format was standardized in 2001 by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers( SMPTE) under the 360M standard. GXF files are transmitted over studio networks. This can be Fibre Channel( FC) or Gigabit Ethernet.

The GXF files can contain metadata in addition to the audio and video. The files can be viewed during transmission and are stored in mass storage devices.
