The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) is an association that develops and adopts standards for film and video. One of the better known standards is the SMPTE time code for synchronizingvideo and audio sequences, which is used in broadcasting and sound studios. Another is the pinout of the RS-422 interface for video editing.

SMPTE has also typified phosphors, specified various television test signals such as the color bar, and also standardized various HDTV formats:

SMPTE 274M is the high-definition HDTV with 1,920 x 1,080pixels, SMPTE 296M has 1,280 x 720 pixels. For HDTV, the SMPTE has also specified the connectors and cables. The 311M-1998 specifications describe the cable and connector construction with the various optical fibers for the individual signals and the copper cables for the supply voltages, and they contain all the relevant transmission parameters such as the attenuation, return loss and insertion loss, bending radius, line resistance, insulation resistance and much more.
