XLINK is a project that was started in 1984 by the University of Karlsruhe. XLINK provides Internet access including news and mail services via TCP/ IP, UUCP, X.25 or X.400. Xlink has since been spun off from university operations and continues its mission as a private company under the nameNetzwerk und Telematic GmbH (NTG).
In 1995, Xlink, together with EUnet and MAZ, launched the international Internet nodeDE- CIX (German Commercial Internet Exchange), which is now one of the largest Internet nodes in the world. When Xlink was taken over by KPNQuest in 2000, the Xlink name disappeared; KPNQuest filed for insolvency in 2002.
