DirectShow is an interactive media technology for the DirectXprogramming interface developed by Microsoft.

DirectShow is a collection of filters whose filters can be chained together. The filters available in DirectShow can be used to demultiplex the media streams of video and audio, while other filter functions support decompression and display functions such as rendering. For audio, filtering can be used to attenuate or amplify individual parts.

The filters used in DirectShow may be available in Windows, but they can also be obtained commercially or as freeware.
