access multiplexer

The term access multiplexer or access node is used in connection with urban networks. It is the node through which the customer's own terminals or end systems, the customer premises equipment ( CPE), are connected to the access network via the last mile.

Both TDM technology and frame switching or cell switching are used as technologies for the access nodes. The latter technology is more efficient and enables local switching, statistical concentration of services and compression of information streams.

In addition to the many standard applications, modern solution approaches in the access area allow the concentration of voice, data, LAN and multimedia applications on a global network platform; for example, the connection of ISDN customers to ISDN networks via non-ISDN subnetworks such as fixed links, dedicated lines, satellites, microwave radio and mobileradio. Also worthy of mention is the provision of U and S interfaces via existing E1 links, and broadband access using xDSL technologies on existing copper twisted pairs.
