Designations for the switching components in the various network configurations

The designations for nodes or network nodes depend on the network configuration and the transmission technology. In local area networks( LAN), for example, they are switches, routers and hubs; in wide-area networks, they are exchanges for line switching or data packet switching; in optical networks, they are optical multiplexers ( OMUX) and optical crossconnects ( OXC); in mobile networks, they are mobile switching centers ( MSC); in IP networks, they are gigabitrouters and terabit routers and switches; and on the Internet, they are the commercial Internet exchanges( CIX) through which national and international traffic is switched. In Germany, the central Internet node is DE-CIX.
