Plone
Plone is a powerful content management system( CMS) for professional use. It is based on the Zopeweb application server, the proven and reliable Pythonframework for developing web applications. Plone is a platform-independent and standards-compliant system with a wide range of application-related functions.
In particular, secure user and group access management is a key element of Plone. Likewise, workflow-driven content management also sets Plone apart from the multitude of other content management systems (CMS). This is confirmed in independent studies such as the Web CMS Report by cmswatch.
The Zope Object Database (ZOBD) is used by Plone to store content. The ACID-compliant(i.e. transaction-safe) ZODB has various general functions such as:
- an undo mechanism,
- replication functions and
- hot backup functions.
To work with Plone, Python version 2.4.4 and Zope 2.10.4 must be installed on the server. There are installers for Windows, Linux, BSD, Solaris and Mac OS Xoperating systems that can be used to install all the required components. Plone can be started after installation via commands on the command line or a graphical user interface.
Plone is developed by a large and very active community under the auspices of the Plone Foundation. With about 160 core developers and 570 extension developers, the Plone community is one of the largest open source communities in the world. In recent years, user networks with special interests have also emerged in the Plone community. The largest network is PloneGov in which cities, regional governments and parliaments from all over the world have joined forces to adapt Plone to the needs of public authorities and administrations. The goal of PloneGov is to develop additions for specific use cases under the General Public Licenses( GPL). In addition, large and small companies from a wide range of industries use Plone as an intranet or Internet solution.
