Internet storage name service protocol (SAN) (iSNS)

The Internet Storage Name Service (iSNS) is used in IP storage by various storage standards based on the IP protocol, such as the Internet Small ComputerSystem Interface over IP( iSCSI). The iSNS protocol centralizes the various configurations of iSCSI devices and storage area network( SAN) devices in an IP storage network.

Thanks to the centralization of all storage devices, the administrator can manage the complete storage network via the ISNS server. The ISNS concept knows the Name Service with which all devices are registered, the provision ofdomain names for the Internet Fibre Channel Protocol( iFCP) and the Discovery Domain( DD) which divides the devices into groups. The DD information is of interest for the security aspects, among other things.

The Internet Storage Name Service Protocol is an IETF specification and described in RFC 4171.
